LinkedIn cold message templates that got 20% replies

Templates don't get replies, structures do: reason, relevance, and a light ask, filled with the lead's real activity.

The messages behind our 20% average reply rate share a structure, not a script: a real reason for writing, one line of relevance, and a light ask. Every high-performing message is short, references something the lead actually did, and reads like the sender typed it. Below are the structures as templates. Adapt the words; keep the bones. And remember the rule that outranks all of them: the list decides more than the message.

The rule before the templates

Across our benchmark data, the campaigns above 33% replies won on targeting, not phrasing. A perfect message to the wrong person gets silence.

So every template below assumes the lead is qualified: right role, right company type, real signal. Without that, skip the templates and fix the list.

Template 1: the activity opener

For leads who engaged with relevant content.

Hi [name], saw your comment on [topic] under [poster]'s post. We work with [role]s hitting exactly that, and I had a thought about your point on [detail]. Open to a short exchange?

Why it works: the reason for writing is real and checkable. The lead's own words are the hook.

Template 2: the visitor follow-up

For identified website visitors. Handle with care; context, not surveillance.

Hi [name], we help [company type] with [the job your product does]. Looked like [their company] might be exploring this space. If that's on your plate, happy to share how [similar company] handles it.

Why it works: it names the problem space without narrating their browsing.

Template 3: the trigger note

For funding, new role, or hiring signals.

Hi [name], congrats on [the trigger]. Teams usually hit [specific problem] about now. If that's landing on you, I can share what [peer company] did about it. If not, ignore me freely.

Why it works: the trigger makes timing legitimate, and "ignore me freely" lowers the cost of reading.

Template 4: the honest short one

For strong-fit leads with no fresh trigger.

Hi [name], no clever hook: you run [function] at [company type], we built a tool for exactly that. Two lines on why it might matter to you: [line]. Worth a look?

Why it works: buyers reward honesty about the outreach itself. Use sparingly; it dulls with volume.

What kills replies

Four lines of company intro before the point. Fake familiarity ("huge fan of your work!") with nothing behind it. A calendar link in message one. And length: past three sentences, reply rates sink.
